Terrasse de chez Anne - Pavillon de la Reine

Dining at a restaurant around Place des Vosges? Great idea! There are few places as charming and iconic as Place des Vosges. As a Marais local, I love starting my day there, savoring a coffee on a terrace with a newspaper, and returning later for a drink or an aperitif in such a unique atmosphere. For this, I have my regular spots under the arcades of « Café Hugo » or « Ma Bourgogne. »

But let’s be honest: when it comes to dining, I happily stray from the crowded terraces (special mention to « Chez Carette » and its endless wait for a table) to seek out spots full of character. Whether in the heart of the square or on the adjacent streets, far from the hustle and the sometimes disappointing quality-price experiences, other establishments promise truly memorable moments.

Here are my favorites, ranging from affordable options to masterpieces of French haute cuisine.

1. Le Bistrot de l’Oulette: French-style warmth and hospitality

  • 38 Rue des Tournelles, 75003 Paris
  • Bastille (L1, L5, L8), Chemin Vert (Ligne 8), Breguet Sabin (L5)
  • dishes priced between €21 and €34

Le Bistrot de l’Oulette is a true institution and one of my must-visit spots in the neighborhood. This bistro offers perfectly executed traditional dishes from the southwest of France, such as melt-in-your-mouth duck confit or delicately prepared sweetbreads. Here, fresh, seasonal ingredients are at the heart of every creation, with a menu that evolves based on the markets. The atmosphere is warm and almost familial, while the always impeccable service adds a touch of understated elegance. Special mention goes to their excellent wine selection, ideal for perfectly complementing your meal. A quintessential gourmet stop in the Marais that is sure to win you over

2. L’Ange 20 : culinary boldness within fork’s reach

  • 44 Rue des Tournelles, 75003 Paris
  • Bastille (L1, L5, L8), Chemin Vert (Ligne 8), Breguet Sabin (L5)
  • dishes at €23

Neighbor to Le Bistrot de l’Oulette, L’Ange 20 is another gem I particularly love. Tucked away in a quiet alley just steps from Place des Vosges, this intimate and charming restaurant offers a cuisine that masterfully combines tradition and creativity. From the dining room, you can see Thierry and his team bustling in the kitchen, preparing generous and flavorful dishes, like the seven-hour lamb, a true delight! The warm and friendly atmosphere makes it feel almost like dining at a friend’s home, with direct interactions with the kitchen. The wine list, featuring an excellent selection of French labels, perfectly complements the experience. An authentic spot with excellent value for money.

3. Le Petit Italien: a gourmet escape in the heart of Paris

  • 5 rue Saint Gilles, 75003 Paris
  • Métro Chemin Vert (L8)
  • antipasti from €11, fish and meats from €20

This is my favorite Italian spot—a true one-way ticket to Italy, tucked away on a quiet street near Place des Vosges. From the moment you step inside, the warm atmosphere, authentic setting, and friendly staff win you over. On the menu, you’ll find classics: homemade ravioli, melt-in-your-mouth osso buco, generous antipasti, and my personal favorite—the grilled octopus, always cooked to perfection. The dishes, made with exceptional ingredients often imported from Italy, are a true ode to la dolce vita. And the desserts are just as delightful: airy tiramisu, creamy panna cotta… Every detail enhances the experience. An unmissable Italian address. Buon appetito!

4. Anne by Mathieu Pacaud: Haute Cuisine in an elegant setting

Anne, a Michelin-starred restaurant, is nestled in the enchanting setting of the Pavillon de la Reine overlooking Place des Vosges. This exceptional venue combines elegance and intimacy, making it the perfect choice for romantic dinners or special occasions. Under the guidance of Michelin-starred chef Mathieu Pacaud, the menu features modern and creative cuisine that elevates local ingredients with contemporary culinary techniques. I was truly impressed by the meticulous attention to detail, from the delicate flavors to the artful presentation of each dish, not to mention the impeccable service. A culinary experience that blends boldness and sophistication. Truly a masterpiece!

To complete this selection, it’s impossible not to mention L’Ambroisie, the only restaurant in the Marais proudly boasting three Michelin stars.

An institution at the pinnacle of French haute cuisine! I must confess, much to my regret, that I haven’t yet had the chance (or the budget) to experience this legendary establishment. However, given its flawless reputation and unanimous praise, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to you without reservation. If you have the opportunity to dine there, prepare yourself for an exceptional culinary journey. Reservations are mandatory via www.ambroisie-paris.com.
