The villages of the district of Marais in Paris

A bit of history about the district of the Marais in Paris…

The Marais district in Paris is a bit like an old lady chic, quiet and full of secrets, which, as you chat, reveals the different facets of its bustling life. Initially marshy (hence its name...), the district was transformed over the centuries into a place where the aristocracy displayed its taste for gilding and private mansions. Its golden age? The XVIIth century, when everyone who mattered in Paris had their entrances there. Then, like in a good novel, the elite abandoned it, making way for artisans, merchants, and workers – a completely different atmosphere…

The 19th and 20th centuries almost signed its death warrant.. After the great Haussmannian transformations of Paris, the district of Marais, deemed unsanitary, was just a breath away from disappearing under the bulldozers. Fortunately, André Malraux, a novelist who became Minister of Culture, saved this historical treasure in the 1960s. Thank you André!

Today, the district of Marais is a real patchwork. Ashkenazi Jews in the 19th century, Chinese after the Great War, LGBTQI+ people since the 80s… Each community has, over the decades, imbued the neighborhood with its cultures and colors. And since the 2000s, it has become the star of tourist guides. We can say that pages of history have been written in these small cobblestone streets!

…and geography!

Define the limits of the Marais, that's another storyThis district has no official boundaries, and everyone has their own definition, without ever agreeing. Generally, it is said that it encompasses a large part of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements: the first boasts of being the " Haut Marais ", while the second, the "Bas Marais », can boast a much longer history (in addition, the 4th extends to the two islands in the heart of Paris and… Notre-Dame !). In short, the debate about what is really part of the Marais is never decided.

I have my own card., simple and wide: it starts at theHôtel de Ville, crosses the museum of Arts et Métiers, climb up to the Place de la République, goes back down to the Bataclan and the Opera Bastille, then ventures towards theArsenal, cross the Seine, reaches the island of Saint-Louis and ends in style in front of Notre-Dame. This is perhaps a somewhat generous vision, but after all, it is mon Marais, MyMarais ! And as I like to organize my walks, I divide this vast area into five “villages”, each with its own atmosphere and treasures to discover.
